Walmart and Target earnings in focus as value shoppers stay engaged
Wall Street expects Target to post a 13.0% year-over-year rise in EPS and Walmart to deliver 9.0% EPS growth, as big box retailers balance value demand against higher-rate headwinds.
Yahoo Finance previewed a busy week of big box retailer earnings, highlighting that Wall Street expects consumers to keep shopping despite still-elevated prices for essentials such as groceries and gas.
According to the preview, analysts expect Target to report second-quarter earnings per share growth of 13.0% and revenue growth of 4.0% on Wednesday, while Walmart is forecast to deliver 9.0% EPS growth and 5.0% revenue growth on Thursday.
The outlook also extends to other home and retail names, with Home Depot set to report on Tuesday, where expectations call for a 1.0% increase in EPS and a 4.0% sales gain, and Lowe’s due Wednesday with estimates for a 2.0% EPS decline alongside 9.0% revenue growth.
Yahoo Finance attributed part of Walmart’s relative strength to its value positioning and its ability to draw higher-income households, including through its Walmart+ membership program. The preview also cited elevated interest rates and low housing turnover as ongoing pressures on home improvement demand, with remodeling activity skewing toward maintenance and repair rather than larger discretionary renovations.
