WHO warns DR Congo Ebola outbreak not under control, death toll rises
DR Congo said the outbreak has killed more than 2,300 people out of nearly 5,000 cases, with health-system gaps and armed groups complicating control efforts.
The World Health Organization warned that the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo is accelerating and remains far from being under control, raising the risk of spread to additional countries. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus made the remarks during an emergency meeting on the outbreak, saying the epidemic has a long way to go before it can be contained.
According to the report, DR Congo said on Monday that the outbreak had killed more than 2,300 people out of nearly 5,000 cases. The figures point to the deadliest Ebola outbreak in the country’s history, the outlet said.
The outbreak was declared on May 15, and it is thought to have been spreading for several weeks by the time it was formally announced. The report also cited the challenges facing response efforts in northern and eastern regions, where state presence is weak, health infrastructure is limited, and armed groups have operated for decades.
