Aon highlights captives as a long-term, purpose-driven risk tool

Aon says captives can be used for a handful of policies at some organizations or for more than 15 policies over a year, supported by multi-year governance and claims oversight.

Aon describes insurance captives as a long-term financial tool that can be tailored to an organization’s risk strategy, emphasizing that captives are purpose-driven rather than tied to the annual bind-and-roll cycle of traditional insurance policies. Risk & Insurance notes that captive structures typically require multi-year governance, board meetings, and ongoing claims oversight.

In an interview featured in Risk & Insurance’s Brilliance in Focus series, Aon’s Sam Tashima said some organizations use captives for only a handful of insurance policies, while others add more than 15 different policies across a year. He also highlighted how the captive model can shift the risk manager’s focus toward an ongoing insurance purchasing strategy, with process controls designed to keep timing requirements on track for tasks such as premium projections and reserve analyses.

The profile also connects the captive discussion to broader industry change, saying nearly three-quarters of organizations have deployed or are piloting AI, while only 18% have seen a majority of their workforce participate in reskilling programs, according to Aon. It adds that the World Economic Forum’s Global Risks Report 2026 shows 57% of respondents expect a stormy outlook over the next 10 years amid geoeconomic pressures.
