Commodity ship traffic at Strait of Hormuz drops further after attack

Kpler ship-tracking data showed only six commodity vessels transited the Strait on Tuesday, versus nine crossings on Monday.

Commodity vessel traffic through the Strait of Hormuz slowed further on Wednesday as operators continued to avoid the area amid heightened security concerns and uncertainty about Iran’s reach of control, Reuters reports.

Ship-tracking data cited by Reuters from Kpler showed just six commodity vessels transited the Strait on Tuesday, down from nine crossings on Monday, and also below the 10 day average of 11 commodity ships moving in or out of the Persian Gulf via the chokepoint.

Reuters said tanker movements were also erratic, with vessels meandering and making U-turns as they weighed escalating security threats and competing claims about whether the Strait is open.

The slowdown comes after a cargo vessel was struck by an unknown projectile in the Strait of Hormuz early on Tuesday local time, according to the UK Maritime Trade Operations, while the U.S. administration says the Strait remains open to traffic and Iran insists it is closed.
