DoD orders audits of foreign research ties at Harvard, MIT, Johns Hopkins
The universities have until August 31 to review academic, financial and research relationships tied to “entities of concern” and decide whether to adjust or end partnerships.
The US Department of Defense has ordered audits of foreign research relationships at Harvard University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Johns Hopkins University, according to US officials cited by the Associated Press, with the identities disclosed after the Pentagon announced the effort.
The defense department notified the schools to conduct comprehensive reviews of their academic, financial and research ties with foreign “entities of concern.” The scope includes assessing whether sensitive or export-controlled research was exposed and determining mitigation steps.
Those steps could include terminating partnerships, as the Pentagon declined to name the universities or detail the specific foreign collaborations that prompted the audits.
The South China Morning Post reported the Pentagon did not respond to repeated requests for information about the collaborations and the evidence of any unauthorized technology transfer or misconduct.
