Harland and Wolff refurbishes cranes for Royal Navy support ship project
The yard plans to overhaul its Samson and Goliath cranes as part of an almost £100 million investment linked to the Fleet Solid Support program, with the first vessel blocks due in Belfast in early 2027.
BBC Business reports that Harland and Wolff will spend £3 million refurbishing its yellow Samson and Goliath cranes at its Belfast shipyard.
The work includes overhauling the cranes engines and replacing key components as the yard, now owned by Spain’s state-owned shipbuilder Navantia since January 2025, prepares for a major Royal Navy defence contract.
Harland and Wolff said the cranes are the integration and final assembly site for three Royal Navy support ships under the Fleet Solid Support, or FSS, programme, with Navantia also having invested in Belfast through a fabrication hall expansion and plasma cutting equipment.
The ships are built in blocks in Spain, which will be transported by barge to Belfast for final assembly, with blocks for the first ship, RFA Resurgent, expected to arrive in early 2027.
