Years recalls all fresh dog meals after reports of eye condition

The company said it received 192 reports of potential unverified eye issues among about 40,000 customers as of early Wednesday, after a prior count of 57 suspected cases.

Move by Years, which sells subscription-based personalized dog meals, has issued a voluntary recall of all of its fresh meals after reports that a recipe change may be linked to a painful eye condition that can lead to sight loss if left untreated. The firm said it chose a recall as a precaution because causation has not been proven.

According to the company, owners should stop feeding their dogs the fresh meals immediately and also should not feed the meals to other animals, or donate or sell the products. Years said reports from some owners describe pets not responding to treatment, with some losing their sight, though it characterized outcomes as mixed.

Years said that as of the early hours of Wednesday it had received 192 customer reports of “potential, yet unverified, eye issues” out of roughly 40,000 customers, after it previously reported 57 suspected cases as of Sunday. The condition is known as sudden bilateral dry eye.

The article also notes that dry eye in dogs, described as keratoconjunctivitis sicca, involves the inability to produce tears, and can cause inflammation and other symptoms. The Royal Kennel Club’s description and online community activity were cited in the report, including a Facebook group tracking affected cases and another discussing possible legal avenues.
