HK survey finds 34.7% of kindergarteners use social media at least an hour daily
More than 80% of parent child disputes in the study were linked to excessive screen time, and guidance for ages two to five is capped at one hour.
A survey in Hong Kong found that 34.7% of kindergarten pupils spend at least one hour a day on recreational screen time, including social media use, according to findings released by the Hong Kong Institute of Family Education.
The study said recreational screen time rises with age, with 60% of junior form students and 66.6% of high schoolers exceeding the international two hour daily limit, while kindergarten use was largely tied to watching videos and communicating with family via parents accounts.
The institute also reported that more than 80% of parent child disputes were linked to excessive screen time. Its chief executive, Tik Chi-yuen, said the pattern was not “that worrying” because the “digital dummy” behavior was rare among respondents.
He described “digital dummy” as using smartphones and electronic gadgets to keep young children quiet, noting that most conflicts at this age occur when parents try to stop extra video watching and children resist.
