Hong Kong Observatory weighs No 1 typhoon signal as low-pressure system nears
The Hong Kong Observatory said the system could shift toward the Gulf of Tonkin or recurves eastward toward Guangdong, prompting a weekend decision on whether to issue the Standby Signal No 1.
The Hong Kong Observatory said it will consider issuing the No 1 standby typhoon signal over the weekend as it monitors a low-pressure system that may bring stormy weather to the city.
The forecaster said the area of low pressure over the northern part of the South China Sea is moving westward and edging closer to the southern section of mainland China’s Hainan province.
It added that the system could move northwards toward the Gulf of Tonkin, also known as Beibu Wan, ahead of the weekend.
The Observatory also flagged a chance the system could recurves to the east, which would bring it closer to Guangdong, and said it will assess the need for issuing the standby signal based on its intensity and movement.
