Nifty 50 slides for 7th straight session as oil worries grow
India’s market decline was driven by concerns over the West Asian conflict lifting crude prices, with Brent above $92 a barrel when the Sensex closed.
India’s Nifty 50 fell for a seventh consecutive session on 19 August, marking its longest losing streak since September 2025, as the West Asian conflict and higher oil prices weighed on sentiment, according to LiveMint Markets citing Reuters. The Nifty 50 closed at 24,078.30, down 77 points, or 0.32%, while the Sensex ended 326 points lower, or 0.42%, at 76,909.68.
About 34 stocks finished lower in the Nifty 50, with Max Healthcare Institute, Coal India, Power Grid Corporation of India, Bajaj Finance, ITC, and Jio Financial Services among the top decliners, each down roughly 1% to 2%. HCL Technologies, JSW Steel, Sun Pharma, and Eternal were among the top gainers, rising about 1% to 2%.
The mid- and small-cap benchmarks also tracked the decline, with the Nifty Midcap 150 down 0.25% and the Nifty Smallcap 250 down 0.63%. The advance-decline ratio favored decliners as nearly 2,500 of roughly 4,500-plus stocks on the BSE fell, while about 1,800 rose.
LiveMint Markets also noted that crude oil prices were a key worry, with Brent crude futures jumping more than 1% to trade above $92 a barrel when the Sensex closed. The outlet said India, as the world’s third-largest importer of oil, faces heightened risks of imported inflation, a widening current account deficit, and pressure on the rupee, which fell to its lowest level since late July.
