India weighs Bangladesh request for extra diesel amid power crisis

Bangladesh ordered shops, malls and markets to close by 8pm to conserve power, with hospitals, pharmacies and restaurants exempted.

India is examining Bangladesh’s request for additional diesel after the country’s worsening power crisis prompted emergency conservation measures, according to SCMP Economy.

India’s foreign ministry spokesman Randhir Jaiswal said the two countries already have an ongoing diesel supply arrangement and that the extra request will be assessed based on India’s own needs, refining capacity and local diesel availability.

Bangladesh’s current diesel supply is tied to an existing 15-year agreement under which India provides 180,000 tonnes of diesel annually, delivered via the India-Bangladesh Friendship pipeline that has been operating since 2017.

The developments could create a diplomatic opening for India and Bangladesh to rebuild trust following Sheikh Hasina’s ousting in 2024, though SCMP Economy noted that other tensions related to her stay in India and Bangladesh’s outreach to Pakistan and China-linked projects continue to complicate relations.
