Peter Thiel buys $76 million stake in Argentina shale firm Vista
Thiel took the position through American depositary shares, as Vista produces about 160,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day from Argentina’s Vaca Muerta.
Peter Thiel, Palantir’s chairman and a hedge fund owner, has bought a 1% stake in Vista, a major operator in Argentina’s Vaca Muerta shale formation, in a deal valued at $76 million through American depositary shares, according to a security filing cited by Reuters.
The purchase points to renewed investor interest in Vaca Muerta, which is described as the world’s second-largest shale oil and gas deposit, amid a global energy crunch.
Reuters also noted that the timing follows Thiel meeting with Argentina’s President Javier Milei four months earlier, when the pair discussed economic policies, including Milei’s opposition to wealth taxes.
Vista is said to produce roughly 160,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day from the play, and has invested more than $6.5 billion in the formation so far, with plans for additional investment. Big oil supermajors have also built a presence in the region, Reuters said.
