Taiwan rocket test fails after vehicle veers off course

Taiwan’s first test of a locally developed satellite launch vehicle ended in a crash in an uninhabited mountainous area, with no reported casualties or property damage.

Taiwan’s first test of a locally developed satellite launch vehicle failed on Wednesday after the rocket veered off course, according to SCMP Economy. The launch took place at around 6am local time from the Jiupeng missile testing base in southern Pingtung county.

Witnesses said the projectile climbed briefly before changing direction away from the sea and toward the mountains. Residents nearby mistook the launch for an incoming missile, and video footage showed villagers reacting as thick smoke later rose from the hillside.

The rocket ultimately crashed in an uninhabited mountainous area. SCMP Economy reported that no casualties or property damage were reported.
