Trump delays 50% tariffs on Canadian goods for three days
The pause comes with a 50% levy on nearly $20 billion of Canadian imports scheduled to start within hours, and Trump linked a final deal to reviving the Keystone XL pipeline.
BBC Business reports that US President Donald Trump said he will delay imposing 50% tariffs on a wide range of Canadian goods for three days while the two countries finalize a trade deal.
The announcement came less than two hours before a 50% levy on nearly $20 billion (C$28 billion) of Canadian imports was set to take effect, as negotiators work through an impasse involving issues such as US tariffs on autos and Canadian provincial bans on American liquor sales.
Trump said the final trade deal could allow the revival of the Keystone XL pipeline, a project that has been blocked under the Obama and Biden administrations, and that would carry 830,000 barrels of oil a day.
The planned tariffs would have applied to categories including wine, dairy, cement, clothing, and hockey equipment, stacking on top of existing duties on Canadian steel and aluminium, autos, and lumber, according to BBC Business.
