Trump threatens to bomb Oman amid Strait of Hormuz tensions
The White House pressure on Iran is coinciding with Iran asserting control over the Strait of Hormuz as a negotiating lever.
Oman’s position as a mediator in the conflict involving Iran has been thrown into focus after US President Donald Trump warned that the United States would bomb Oman if it “gets in the way,” according to reporting by SCMP Economy, citing remarks made on Fox News.
The threat followed Oman’s proximity to a deal with Iran over management of the Strait of Hormuz, a key chokepoint for global shipping, with SCMP Economy reporting that Trump was unhappy with Oman’s role in those talks and that regional officials linked the move to Tehran-US nuclear negotiations.
SCMP Economy adds that the pressure on Trump reflects his stated goal of a quick war and a weakened Iran, while Iran has responded by using the Strait of Hormuz as leverage, asserting control over the waterway that had long been treated as international before the war.
Oman’s foreign ministry did not immediately respond to questions about the threat or whether Oman and Iran would issue a joint statement tied to their strait arrangement, according to SCMP Economy.
