Vista Energy shares jump after Peter Thiel discloses stake

Regulatory filings show Thiel Macro LLC bought about $76 million of Vista Energy shares, pushing VIST up more than 45% year-to-date.

Vista Energy shares rallied on Aug. 17 after regulatory filings confirmed billionaire investor Peter Thiel has built a sizable stake in the oil and gas company, with the stock jumping sharply afterward, according to Yahoo Finance.

The report said Thiel Macro LLC has spent about $76 million to accumulate 1.2 million Vista Energy shares, and that the stake is now the second-largest holding of Thiel Macro LLC. At the time of writing, Vista Energy stock was up more than 45% versus the start of the year.

Yahoo Finance also pointed to Vista's recent operating and valuation mix, citing fiscal Q2 results in which the company more than quadrupled per-share earnings to $2.38 year over year. It added that Vista was trading at a forward price-to-earnings ratio below 7x.

The outlet further tied the move to Vista's production and cost profile, saying cash operating costs have remained well under regional averages, alongside ongoing share buybacks, including more than MXN 58 million repurchased mid-August alone.
