Wetherspoons bans loud phone calls and music on smartphone speakers
The company said the change covers 792 pubs across the UK, citing smartphones and tablets as a growing source of noise complaints.
Wetherspoons has introduced a ban on playing music and taking calls on speaker in its pubs, according to the Guardian Business. The outlet described how patrons at two London locations welcomed the policy as a way to keep the pub atmosphere calmer.
The newspaper reported that Tim Martin, Wetherspoons owner, framed the measure as protecting customers from other people’s amplified sound, including calls and videos played through smartphone or tablet speakers. Some customers also compared the move to earlier changes at the chain, noting that TVs with sound are currently allowed in Wetherspoons.
The company announced the policy on Tuesday and said sound from smartphones and tablets has become an “increasing problem in recent years,” the Guardian Business reported. The ban applies across Wetherspoons’ 792 pubs.
