Baron Small Cap Fund highlights Cognex on growth and cost discipline

Cognex, a machine vision solutions provider, contributed 1.4% to the fund's Q2 performance after closing at $66.60 on Aug. 17.

Baron Capital highlighted Cognex Corporation in its Q2 2026 investor letter for the Baron Small Cap Fund, pointing to the company as an example of growth supported by cost discipline and sales strength, according to Yahoo Finance.

The Baron Small Cap Fund gained 12.6% in the second quarter on institutional shares, trailing the Russell 2000 Growth Index's 25.7% return. The letter also noted that small caps outperformed large caps during the quarter, with performance concentrated in higher-beta and momentum stocks, areas where the fund has historically had less exposure.

In the update, Baron Capital said Cognex contributed 1.4% to the fund's Q2 results. Cognex closed at $66.60 per share on Aug. 17, with a one-month return of 5.8% and a 52-week gain of 53.6%, and the company has a market capitalization of $11.0 billion.

Baron Capital attributed Cognex's share rise during the quarter to a robust earnings report, citing accelerating, broad-based growth tied to improving industrial conditions. The letter said top-line momentum plus material cost-cutting efforts were helping drive earnings per share expansion and that management expects the elevated growth level to persist.
