Comcast adds Xfinity Shield to bundle home security with broadband
The Xfinity Shield platform will be available for Xfinity Internet customers at no additional cost, while an add-on tier charges $15 per month for hardware and cloud video storage.
Comcast is expanding its Xfinity home security lineup with a new platform called Xfinity Shield, designed to pair Wi-Fi based protection with cybersecurity tools and family controls. Reuters reports the move is aimed at making Comcast's broadband service more “sticky” amid intense competition for subscribers.
Comcast said the base Xfinity Shield offering is available to Xfinity Internet customers at no additional cost. A $15 a month option adds an indoor camera, door and window sensors, cloud video storage, and 24/7 urgent response.
The company also highlighted usage and security scale on its network, saying the average Xfinity customer connects 36 devices to Wi-Fi and that Comcast's network identifies, filters, and blocks an average of 30 million threats each day. Comcast said the new features are delivered through the Xfinity app, using its gateway and connected devices, with AI capabilities across its network and Gateway to support the service.
In an interview with Reuters, Comcast product chief Fraser Stirling said the company is lowering the barrier to adopting a total security product through Xfinity Shield. The rollout comes as Comcast faces pressure to retain subscribers in a highly competitive market.
