China urges US to scrap up to 100% drone tariffs
The tariffs are scheduled for September 3, but Chinese exports of some drone models to the US already fell in July, according to customs data cited by SCMP Economy.
China has urged Washington to withdraw planned tariffs on imported drones, warning the duties could disrupt global supply chains and harm Chinese companies, according to SCMP Economy.
A Chinese Ministry of Commerce spokesman, He Yadong, said Beijing opposed the US decision to use national security authorities under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act, arguing the tariff rates are applied unevenly across trading partners.
SCMP Economy reports that although the new tariffs are set to take effect on September 3, Chinese drone shipments to the United States are already under pressure, with exports of some drone models plunging in July based on customs data.
The outlet also noted that US President Donald Trump signed a proclamation on August 13 imposing a 100% tariff on drones over 25 kilograms, as well as models with thermal-imaging technology and certain critical components, while adding that many Chinese drones shipped to the US are used for civilian purposes including agriculture and equipment inspections.
