Fairshake-backed bid falls short in Florida Democratic primary
Fairshake affiliate Protect Progress spent more than $2 million in the Florida contest, and the ads drew criticism for using fake Miami Herald headlines.
Fairshake, the crypto industry political action committee, suffered a setback in Florida during this week’s congressional primary elections, as one of its affiliate campaigns to unseat Democratic candidate Oliver Gilbert fell short. CoinDesk reports a Fairshake affiliate spent more than $2 million trying to defeat Gilbert in the Democratic primary, aiming to replace a retiring Democrat who endorsed him.
Gilbert, a former Miami-Dade County commissioner, won the Tuesday primary vote over a crowded field despite an aggressive campaign from the Fairshake affiliate Protect Progress. The campaign faced criticism for using fake Miami Herald headlines in its ads, according to CoinDesk.
CoinDesk also reports Gilbert had campaigned against President Donald Trump’s policies and criticized his crypto ties, while Protect Progress backed other candidates in the same race, including one that finished close behind. With Florida’s district remaining heavily Democratic, the outlet said it is likely Gilbert advances to Congress after the November general election.
Elsewhere, CoinDesk says Fairshake’s other supported candidates generally performed better in primaries across Florida, Alaska, and Wyoming. The outlet cited spokesman Geoff Vetter as saying the super PAC and its affiliates recorded 49 wins out of 53 congressional primary elections, adding that most of Fairshake’s chosen candidates with smaller financial commitments won their races.
