Plattsburgh considers moratorium on crypto mining and AI data centers

A proposed temporary land use ban would pause approvals for “certain high energy computing facilities” needing at least 300 kilowatts for 12 months, with another council meeting set for Sept. 17.

A New York town is weighing a new temporary moratorium that would restrict land use approvals for high energy computing facilities tied to both cryptocurrency mining and AI data centers, according to Cointelegraph.

Plattsburgh held a public hearing where the town council discussed a proposed short term ban covering operations that require 300 or more kilowatts, with the moratorium lasting 12 months if approved.

Cointelegraph reports that as of Tuesday, signals indicated the mayor had not approved the moratorium, and the common council is scheduled to hold another meeting on Sept. 17.

The town previously moved to ban Bitcoin mining, with Plattsburgh becoming one of the first U.S. jurisdictions to do so, adopting a measure in 2018 that lasted 18 months, amid concerns about electricity costs. Cointelegraph also notes that some crypto mining companies have shifted toward AI and high performance computing as power costs rise and token prices fall.
