Indian rupee seen drawing support as RBI turns more cautious
Analysts point to RBI minutes that skew more hawkish, with the central bank pausing at 5.25% repo while signaling readiness to tighten if inflation spillovers broaden.
The Indian rupee (INR) is being supported by strong fundamentals and large foreign exchange reserves, even as commentary from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) takes on a more cautious, hawkish tone, according to FXStreet. Analysts say domestic demand and export performance continue to underpin growth, but officials are increasingly focused on potential inflation spillovers.
FXStreet cites Commerzbank analysis noting that inflation is projected around 5%, while FX reserves have climbed back above $700 billion. That reserve level, analysts argue, gives the RBI more capacity to smooth volatility from external shocks such as energy price swings and gold-related moves.
DBS Group Research highlighted that the RBI’s policy minutes were more hawkish than public messaging, with committee members discussing early signs of input costs spreading into wider consumer categories. The minutes also reportedly set expectations by putting rate cut speculation to rest through Deputy Governor Gupta’s stance, while Governor Sanjay Malhotra indicated a pause remains in place unless inflation quickens.
With global energy volatility and monsoon risks still in view, investors are assessing whether the RBI will keep its wait-and-see approach or later consider tightening during the fiscal year. FXStreet reports banks expect the rupee to stay broadly stable, with Commerzbank projecting the currency will remain cushioned by reserves and steady growth, and DBS adding that any repricing toward tightening could provide additional support for USD/INR below the roughly 96.00 ceiling.
