Russia and Iran use the Caspian Sea as a logistics corridor
A report says Moscow is already sending military-related supplies to Iran via the Caspian Sea, using an inland route that Western navies cannot directly enter.
The Caspian Sea is emerging as a logistics corridor tied to the deepening military relationship between Russia and Iran, allowing the two countries to move cargo beyond the reach of Western naval power, according to RFE/RL cited in an OilPrice write-up.
The outlet says NBC News reported that it obtained and confirmed a document, with a Western official, indicating that Russia is already using the Caspian Sea to send military-related supplies to Iran.
Defense policy expert Barry Pavel, cited by RFE/RL, said the corridor could see increased traffic as cooperation grows, while both sides operate under international sanctions.
The materials provided note that Iran became a major supplier to Russia in its full scale war against Ukraine, and that Iran helped Russia develop Shahed drone production capabilities, including through the Alabuga Special Economic Zone.
