Trump vows tougher economic measures targeting Iran after ceasefire ends
The announcement follows a 60-day ceasefire expiry, and comes after the UAE said it would sever all financial and economic ties with Iran.
The BBC reports that US President Donald Trump said he will launch tougher economic measures against Iran and against any country that helps or does business with Tehran after a 60-day ceasefire expired on Monday.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the US would begin what he called an "economic D-Day" because Iran had failed to make a deal with the US, without providing further details or naming additional nations beyond Iran.
The outlet says Trump’s move appears to extend the US campaign started in April to sanction foreign banks or firms that do business with Iran, with the president warning that financial and business support linked to Tehran would face "tremendous economic consequences."
The BBC adds that the timing follows the UAE’s decision to sever financial and economic ties with Iran after a missile threat, with Iranian forces warning Gulf neighbors against assistance to US military operations; the report also notes China is not mentioned but remains a major buyer of Iranian oil, and the US has sanctioned oil processors in China.
