China-Japan tourism slump deepens as arrivals fall 56.1% in July

Mainland arrivals dropped for an eighth straight month, and total foreign trips to Japan rose just 0.1% in July despite the declines from China.

Mainland Chinese tourist arrivals in Japan fell for an eighth consecutive month in July, extending a downturn tied to worsening ties between Beijing and Tokyo, according to Japan National Tourism Organisation data cited by SCMP Economy.

Arrivals from mainland China plunged 56.1% year on year in July. For the first seven months of 2026, mainland Chinese visitors fell 56.3% year on year, while overall foreign arrivals to Japan were down 1.7% for the same period, the JNTO figures showed. On a month-by-month basis, total foreign arrivals edged up 0.1% in July, the first increase in four months, supported by demand from South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, and the Middle East.

SCMP Economy reports that a sharp fall in organized group tours is a key driver of the decline. An independent aviation and travel industry analyst said travel agencies are holding back on group trips when official travel warnings are in place, making group travel harder.

A Shanghai-based frequent traveler described seeing fewer Chinese tour groups around major attractions and said individual travelers have largely replaced organized group tours on the ground.
