CDC reports 431 salmonella cases linked to jalapeno peppers
The CDC said 57 people have been hospitalized, and illnesses began between June 19 and August 2.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said a multistate salmonella javiana outbreak linked to jalapeno peppers has grown to 431 infections across 32 states as of August 19, up from 345 cases reported earlier in the month, according to Insurance Journal.
CDC data cited by the outlet showed 57 hospitalizations and no deaths. The agency said illnesses began between June 19 and August 2 and that the infections have been traced to jalapeno peppers from Sinaloa, Mexico, distributed by Coast Citrus Distributors.
The CDC estimate cited in the article places salmonella as a common cause of more than 1 million foodborne illnesses in the United States each year. It noted that typical symptoms include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps.
In interviews summarized by the CDC, 91% of people reported eating at a Mexican-style restaurant before becoming ill, including at Chipotle Mexican Grill and QDOBA. The outlet also said Chipotle switched its jalapeno supplier and QDOBA restaurants stopped using the ingredient, while U.S. officials are also investigating a separate multistate cyclosporiasis outbreak linked to lettuce from Taylor Farms.
