Optimism shifts $49.7M OP airdrop reserve into Strategic Ecosystem Fund

The onchain vote passed with 17.974 million OP in favor versus 10.931 million opposing, with Test in Prod tipping support to 61.8%.

Optimism governance approved a proposal to move 546.9 million OP tokens, worth about $49.7 million at the time of the vote, from a reserve previously reserved for future user airdrops into a Strategic Ecosystem Fund administered by the Optimism Foundation. The change eliminates the dedicated future user airdrop pool and authorizes the Foundation to use the tokens for partnership deals, incentives, and other initiatives aimed at growing OP Mainnet and OP Enterprise, according to The Defiant.

The proposal states that no additional airdrops are currently planned and that tokens already distributed through Airdrops 1 through 5 are unaffected. The Optimism Foundation said it has distributed 269.1 million OP across five airdrops, and it argued that broad user acquisition is no longer aligned with its current institutional strategy.

The vote hinged on the Optimism core development team Test in Prod, which cast 8.486 million OP in favor with 16 minutes and 52 seconds left. The onchain tally closed at 17.974 million OP supporting the move and 10.931 million opposing it, and CoinDesk’s review cited by The Defiant found that Test in Prod’s intervention raised support to 61.84% from 45.77%.

Opponents said the unused airdrop reserve should be reconsidered but objected to the scope of the replacement fund, while L2BEAT’s governance team described the mandate as “very open-ended” and called for clearer details on expected deployments and how success would be measured. The approved proposal also calls for public updates to Optimism’s token accounting and reporting of cumulative deployments from the Strategic Ecosystem Fund through the Foundation’s yearly budget report, and notes that the 269.1 million OP already distributed will not be clawed back or reclassified.
