Paul Biya returns to Cameroon after more than two months abroad

The 93-year-old president left Geneva, where his office said he was on a short private stay, after a prolonged absence that prompted speculation about his health and ability to rule.

Cameroon’s President Paul Biya has returned to the country after an absence of more than two months, a development that has drawn renewed scrutiny of his health and leadership after more than four decades in power, according to SCMP Economy.

Biya, 93 and the world’s oldest serving head of state, arrived in Yaounde late in the afternoon from Geneva, where his office previously described his time there as a short private stay that began on June 7.

After arriving, Biya left the airport alongside first lady Chantal Biya, waving from a car en route to the presidential palace, while dozens of supporters gathered to welcome him.

SCMP Economy notes that Biya’s health has been a recurring focus of rumors, often tied to frequent trips to Geneva, and that the government recently denied reports that his condition had deteriorated, saying he was working.
