Royal Mail improves mail delivery but misses Ofcom targets again
First class next day delivery rose to 85% from 76% over the same period last year, but fell short of Ofcom's 90% target.
Royal Mail again missed UK delivery targets set by regulator Ofcom for both first and second class post, while saying performance is improving as its turnaround plan continues, according to BBC Business.
Between March and June, Royal Mail delivered 85% of first class deliveries the next day, up from 76% in the same three months of 2025, but below Ofcom's 90% requirement. For second class mail, 91% was delivered within three days, an improvement from the previous year but still short of the 95% target.
The company called the results “encouraging” and said its work to improve service is starting to have an impact. Its chief operating officer, Jamie Stephenson, said there is “more to do” as Royal Mail implements a 500 million pound investment plan over the next five years.
Royal Mail, owned by International Distribution Services (IDS), has faced competition, declining letter volumes, and fines for missing targets. Ofcom fined it a record 21 million pounds in October for missing targets in 2024 to 2025, and the firm is currently under investigation for failing to meet targets for a second year running, while it aims to meet Ofcom targets by May 2027 as part of the plan.
