Australia charges dual citizen accused of spying for Russia in Ukraine

Police allege the suspect trained in Russia after traveling there in October 2024, then provided or attempted to provide information on Ukrainian military activities to people linked to Russian intelligence.

Australian police charged a 27-year-old Russian-Australian dual citizen with foreign interference for allegedly seeking to pass intelligence about Ukrainian military activities to Russia, according to SCMP Economy.

The outlet said the suspect underwent “military-style” training in Russia and later joined the Ukrainian armed forces, Australian federal police commissioner Krissy Barrett said at a news conference.

Prosecutors allege the man traveled to Russia for training in October 2024, returned to Australia, and “maintained contact” with individuals he believed were linked to Moscow’s intelligence services.

Barrett said he then “provided, or attempted to provide” information obtained in Ukraine to people he believed were acting on behalf of Russian intelligence services, and that the conduct created a risk to the safety and security of Ukrainian military personnel.
