US urges China to join economic pressure against Iran
Scott Bessent said China relies on the Gulf for about 50.0 percent of its energy, arguing that joining US efforts would benefit Beijing.
The US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent urged China to join Washington’s latest effort to economically pressure and isolate Iran, after talks aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz and ending a six-month conflict collapsed, according to SCMP Economy.
Bessent told CNBC that the proposed approach would amount to a coordinated economic isolation, adding that the US would seek clarity from other countries on whether they align with US efforts or not.
He also argued that China has a strong incentive to participate because China gets around 50.0 percent of its energy from the Gulf, framing it as a service to Beijing.
SCMP Economy reported that Bessent said the US is preparing economic sanctions and is effectively pressing the question of whether those measures would include China.
