Canada to retaliate with tariffs after US talks collapse
The breakdown in negotiations in Washington clears the way for new 50.0% US tariffs affecting about US$20.0 billion in goods, equal to 5.5% of Canadian exports to the United States.
Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney said he will impose retaliatory tariffs on the United States after trade talks failed, escalating tensions between the two long time allies, according to SCMP Economy.
Carney said negotiations broke down in Washington on Friday, allowing new 50.0% US tariffs to take effect on some US$20.0 billion worth of goods, a level described as 5.5% of Canadian exports to the United States.
The report says Carney rejected the US conditions as unacceptable, after Trump had said Washington should be able to reach a deal with Canada given the relationship between the two leaders.
SCMP Economy reported Carney characterized the situation as negotiations moving toward an agreement earlier in the week before talks ended.
