Canada pledges matching tariffs after US imposes 50% duties

The US tariffs took effect at 04:00 GMT on about $20 billion of Canadian goods, and no further talks are planned.

Canada has vowed to respond “dollar for dollar” after the United States imposed 50% tariffs on some Canadian goods, following the collapse of trade talks, according to the Guardian Business.

The new tariffs began at 04:00 GMT and apply to about $20 billion worth of Canadian products, a range that includes steel and other items cited in the report. Trade experts warned the measure could lead to some job losses, with the largest impact expected to be political and likely to deepen tensions between the traditional allies.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada would match the US approach and described last-minute changes to US proposed terms as unfair and uneconomic, prompting a recall of negotiators. US officials, including the US trade representative Jamieson Greer, accused Canada of walking back commitments and seeking extra concessions, and said the breakdown was a “missed opportunity for Canada.”

The report also notes the two sides appeared close to a deal on steel, aluminium and cars earlier, but it was scuttled at the last minute, and no further talks are planned.
