China reports record natural hydrogen seepage in Sichuan Basin
Hydrogen purity in samples from the Sichuan Basin ranged from 97.3% to 98.2%, according to a study cited by OilPrice.
Countries are competing to identify natural hydrogen deposits that could be extracted for industrial use, with recent research highlighting new potential. OilPrice says the race follows a U.S. Department of Energy estimate that there are trillions of metric tons of natural hydrogen deposits in underground pockets globally.
Just this week, OilPrice cited a study out of China reporting record levels of hydrogen seepage in the Sichuan Basin. The samples measured hydrogen purity between 97.3% and 98.2%, and the researchers said the findings broke records in China, including discoveries above 98.0% purity.
OilPrice also pointed to hydrogen development interest outside China, noting that private investors are moving toward similar seeps in the Philippines. It cited billionaire-backed startup Koloma as believing the country could be a key location for a geologic hydrogen shift, and said Koloma’s CEO Pete Johnson called the Philippines the largest natural hydrogen seep area anywhere on the planet.
