Iran president urges end to US war as Strait of Hormuz stays partly shut
Iran says it is in a position of strength, citing Tehran keeping the Strait of Hormuz partially shut while the US maintains a naval counter-blockade.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said it is time to end the months-long Middle East war involving the United States, arguing Tehran appears to be in a stronger position than Washington. He said talks between the longtime foes remain on hold and that the conflict, which began in February, is in a stalemate, according to SCMP Economy. Pezeshkian pointed to Iran keeping the Strait of Hormuz partially shut and to Washington’s continued naval counter-blockade as key factors behind his call for an end to hostilities. He framed the push as a decision made from “a position of power and dignity,” the outlet reported. He also defended a June memorandum of understanding with the US that is aimed at ending the war, saying it does not amount to surrender. Pezeshkian said, in the briefing referenced by SCMP Economy, that the agreement contains no clauses that indicate capitulation and that the commitments are structured around the other side.
