Japan’s crown prince marks 90 years of immigration to Paraguay

The ceremony near Asuncion drew about 650 attendees, and Paraguay’s Japanese community is now estimated at around 10,000 people.

Japan’s Crown Prince Fumihito and Crown Princess Kiko attended a ceremony near Asuncion on Friday to mark 90 years of Japanese immigration to Paraguay, praising how immigrants and their descendants helped shape the South American country.

According to SCMP Economy, the event included remarks about how early settlers overcame hardships and took root in Paraguay, with the crown prince expressing hope the two countries would continue to rely on that shared history as a bridge.

SCMP Economy reported that around 650 people took part, including Paraguay President Santiago Pena and his wife, and Pena thanked the Japanese community for contributions he said included agriculture, education, and broader society.

Ahead of the ceremony, the royal couple laid flowers at a memorial for deceased settlers and met members of the Japanese community, estimated at about 10,000, after the first group of 81 settlers arrived from Japan and founded a settlement in La Colmena in 1936.
