Tesla recalls about 2.98 million vehicles in China over door handles
The recall affects China-made and imported Model 3, Model Y, Model X, and Model S cars, with Tesla set to address the issue via software updates.
Tesla is recalling about 2.98 million China-made and imported electric vehicles in China over safety risks tied to hidden car door handles, according to the Chinese state administration for market regulation, as reported by the Guardian Business.
The vehicles included in the recall are Model 3, Model Y, Model X, and Model S. China has been increasing scrutiny of flush or hidden door handles after EV accidents in which hidden electronic door handles allegedly failed, leaving occupants trapped inside.
The regulator said the handles could hinder quick door opening for users or prevent rescuers from gaining access in severe situations, such as collisions that cause electrical system failure. Tesla will perform software updates to mitigate the risks, the notice added.
Industry figures described the recall as a safety focused step, with Cui Dongshu of the China Passenger Car Association calling it an “inevitable step” and characterizing the industry’s shift as a policy driven safety upgrade. The Guardian Business also noted that other automakers, including Xiaomi, Leapmotor, and additional Chinese brands, have issued similar recalls.
