China launches first joint archaeology project in Peru
The planned work will begin with field surveys of Caral and Aspero to set excavation plans before expanding to later Inca sites in Peru’s Andean highlands.
Chinese archaeologists are set to carry out their first joint field project in South America after signing a cooperation agreement for research at Peru’s Caral Archaeological Zone, according to SCMP Economy.
The Institute of Archaeology of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences said the partnership with Peru’s Ministry of Culture group and the Professional School of Archaeology at the National University of San Marcos will include training, field surveys, joint excavations and projects to preserve cultural heritage.
The project is scheduled to start with surveys of key Caral civilisation sites, including major population centers such as Caral and Aspero, to develop excavation plans.
SCMP Economy also said the collaboration will later extend to sites from Peru’s Inca period in the Andean highlands to support studies comparing ancient Chinese and South American civilizations.
