CME moves toward NHL team-performance futures as Volatility Shares files ETFs

CME’s on-ice performance futures are not expected to begin trading until Sept. 28, pending regulatory review, while Volatility Shares filed for 32 hockey-team ETFs.

The ETF industry is expanding into sports exposure, with CME announcing plans for futures tied to individual NHL teams and Volatility Shares filing for a slate of ETFs linked to that theme, according to Yahoo Finance. CME said the futures tied to team performance are not scheduled to start trading until Sept. 28, subject to regulatory review. Three days after that announcement, Volatility Shares filed for 32 ETFs designed to trade the performance of each NHL team. The report notes that ETF launches have accelerated this year, with more than 900 funds already launched through Aug. 5, putting 2026 near last year’s record with roughly five months remaining. It also emphasizes that these are filings and not guarantees that any of the proposed hockey ETFs will ultimately launch. Yahoo Finance cites Baird Strategas ETF strategist Todd Sohn saying it is getting “difficult to keep up with” the pace of registrations, and he indicated he highly doubts the hockey ETFs will arrive anytime soon. The piece also points to additional ETF proliferation tied to themes such as AI and stock groups, including filings for a “Magnificent Six” ETF that would exclude Tesla from a similar “Magnificent Seven” concept.
