Rising living costs push more UK university students to live at home

More than 81,000 UK 18-year-olds said they plan to live with family, with rates ranging from 48% in Scotland to 20% in Wales, according to UCAS data cited by the BBC.

More UK university students are choosing to live at home than in the previous nine years, with new UCAS figures showing over 81,000 accepted 18-year-olds intend to live with their families this year, or just over one in three in that group.

The BBC reports students attributed the shift mainly to rising cost of living and accommodation prices. It cited examples including Beatrice and Amelia, who said they found renting unaffordable, and Jessica, who said the cost of renting is “ridiculous” and “insane,” while also citing the impact of commuting and the need for a part-time job.

The data varies across the UK, with 48% of applicants in Scotland planning to live at home compared with 20% in Wales, and the trend rising across the board, the BBC said.

The outlet added that student rents have risen sharply and that the figures could increase as more students accept places through clearing. It also referenced an earlier BBC follow-up in which a student said she saved more than £7,000 on accommodation by commuting into Manchester each day.
