Tokayev ally party wins landslide in Kazakhstan parliamentary election
Exit polling put Adilet at 71.8% of votes, while voter turnout reached 74.19%, and the result follows constitutional changes tied to the post-2022 overhaul.
Kazakhstan parliamentary elections delivered a landslide victory for a party aligned with President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, an outcome that came hours after he indicated he could seek continued leadership beyond his current term. Adilet, led by a former top aide and backed by business leaders, was projected to win 71.8% of the vote, according to an exit poll aired on state television.
The agrarian-focused Auyl party placed second with 6.4% of votes, with seven parties contesting 145 seats allocated by party list for a five-year term. Five parties cleared the 5% threshold, the exit poll showed, with a margin of error of plus or minus 1 percentage point, while turnout was 74.19% based on the central election commission.
Tokayev told reporters after voting that he has the right to seek re-election under the law, adding that he may be able to give a more specific answer next year. Bloomberg also noted that the Adilet party was founded in May, and that the former ruling Amanat party announced in June that it would merge with Adilet.
The election is part of a broader constitutional overhaul initiated by Tokayev after deadly 2022 riots that he described as an attempted coup. The new single-chamber parliament replaces the previous bicameral system, following a March referendum that also established the vice-presidency to succeed the president if early departure occurs.
