France consumer confidence holds at 86 in August

Inflation expectations jumped sharply in August after easing in July, as households grew more concerned about faster price growth over the next 12 months.

France’s consumer confidence remained flat in August, with the headline indicator holding at 86, according to data released by INSEE on Aug. 25, 2026. The reading is still well below the indicator’s long term average of 100.

The survey pointed to a more cautious outlook among households. Consumers showed more focus on saving than spending, with the measure of whether it is a good time to save rising by 2 points to a new record high, while the indicator for making major purchases fell by 2 points and stayed below its long term average.

Households’ view of their finances showed limited change, with the balance on their past financial situation edging down by 1 point and expectations for future finances improving by 1 point. INSEE also reported that both measures remain below historical averages, suggesting households are not yet convinced that their finances will improve materially.

Pessimism about the broader economy persisted alongside renewed inflation worries. The indicator for expectations for future living standards and a measure of views on past living standards both declined, while concerns about unemployment rose by 3 points, and the share of households expecting prices to accelerate over the next 12 months surged, jumping 19 points after July’s decline.
