London bus drivers resume strike over heatwave working conditions
About 1,500 Unite members at Arriva North London are taking four days of strike action from Tuesday to Friday, with further stoppages planned in coming weeks.
London bus drivers have resumed strike action over working conditions during heatwaves, after some workers rejected an agreement reached between the Unite union and bus operator Arriva North London.
Unite said about 1,500 members across north London and Essex will participate in a four-day strike from Tuesday to Friday, with additional stoppages planned for later weeks.
Drivers raised concerns that proposed air conditioning improvements across Arriva North London’s fleet of 730 buses may not be completed by next summer.
The reporting says drivers have experienced excessive in-cab heat for years, with temperatures often exceeding 40C during this year’s record run of five heatwaves, and the cooling system has reduced temperatures by about 2C to 3C, amid worries about fatigue and heat related health issues.
Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said bus drivers are being put at risk and that strike action will continue until the company makes meaningful changes workers can accept.
