New 10p coin design featuring King Charles and rare grouse enters circulation
The Royal Mint has released 600,000 2023-dated coins and 6.5 million 2026-dated coins to banks and post offices, with 10p pieces making up part of a wider wildlife-themed redesign.
A redesigned UK 10p coin featuring King Charles III and a threatened Scottish capercaillie is entering circulation, after new 10p releases had been absent for about four years, according to BBC Business.
The Royal Mint said the coins are newly minted and dated 2023 and 2026, with the reverse side depicting the capercaillie, a grouse species found in a small part of Scotland and threatened with extinction.
The Royal Mint said the coins are being distributed across the country because there has been sufficient demand, and it noted that coins with King Charles portraits so far have been limited to the 5p, 50p and £1.
BBC Business also reported that 1.4 billion 10p coins were already in circulation, while King Charles III coins represented about 1% of the 24.1 billion coins in the UK, with the new capercaillie design based on an illustration used by the RSPB.
