NZ dollar steadies near multi-month highs against dollar
NZD/USD was around 0.5957 after New Zealand second-quarter retail sales fell 0.5% on the quarter, while the RBNZ set its Official Cash Rate at 2.50% in July.
FXStreet reports the New Zealand dollar held firm against the US dollar, with NZD/USD consolidating just below 0.6000 near recent multi-month highs. The pair was little changed on the day, as investors appeared to treat soft retail sales as secondary to the interest-rate outlook.
According to FXStreet, New Zealand’s second-quarter retail sales fell 0.5% on the quarter versus expectations for a small increase, and the prior reading was also weaker. FXStreet said the reaction was muted, pointing to the broader “rate story” as the main driver for the currency.
FXStreet also linked NZD strength to the Reserve Bank of New Zealand, which lifted the Official Cash Rate to 2.50% at its July meeting. The central bank judged that inflation pressures tied to higher global oil prices could stay elevated for longer.
On the technical side, FXStreet cited NZD/USD trading at 0.5957, capped just under the 20-period Simple Moving Average near 0.5960. It said price remained above the 100-period SMA around 0.5894, while the Relative Strength Index at 57 suggested a mildly constructive tone without overbought conditions.
