US Treasury vows zero-leakage sanctions enforcement against Iran

The Treasury said sanctions include nearly 60 Iran-linked entities, people and vessels, and it expects countries to shut activities identified by Washington on set timelines.

The US Treasury said it is stepping up enforcement aimed at Iran’s financial connections worldwide, with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent outlining a “zero leakage” approach and calling it an “economic onslaught.”

Bessent said the effort will be paired with pressure on other governments, including a plan for defined timelines for countries to close activities Treasury has identified, such as shutting down Iran bank branches abroad.

If governments do not comply, he said the US would act unilaterally using Treasury authorities, and he warned that no country, including China, would be exempt from US sanctions reach.

Ahead of the remarks, the Treasury issued a statement detailing sanctions on nearly 60 Iran-linked entities, people and vessels, including a network of broker companies operating across locations such as the United Arab Emirates, Hong Kong, China, Singapore, Switzerland and Europe, according to the report.
