Darline Graham wins GOP nomination for South Carolina Senate term
Graham secured 52.4 percent of the vote in Tuesday’s runoff after advancing from an August primary with less than 50 percent.
Darline Graham, the appointed U.S. senator from South Carolina, won the Republican nomination for a full term in Tuesday’s runoff, according to results released at 9 p.m. She defeated Representative Ralph Norman and is set to advance to the November election in the Republican stronghold.
The outcome came after a troubled debate moment last week, when Graham was asked whether Taiwan and the South China Sea are national security issues for the United States. In that exchange, she asked the moderator to repeat the question and said she was not informed on national security, though she said she supports the military.
Graham was appointed to the seat in July following the unexpected death of her brother, Lindsey Graham, a senior and influential Republican. The campaign required her to contest a special primary because she entered the race as a political newcomer, backed by President Donald Trump.
The runoff follows an earlier August primary in which neither candidate won more than 50 percent of the vote, forcing Tuesday’s vote. During the debate, Norman argued that Taiwan is “a definite ally” and pointed to the island’s semiconductor industry, while he has also been a strong Trump supporter, the report said.
