Japan plans blockchain-based stock and bond settlement system by early 2027

Japan’s financial regulators aim to speed settlement from two days to real-time, with full operations targeted for the early 2030s.

Japan’s top financial agencies are working on a blockchain-based settlement system for stocks and Japanese government bonds, with details expected as early as the beginning of 2027, according to The Block citing Nikkei Asia.

The plan involves the Financial Services Agency, the Ministry of Finance, and the Bank of Japan, which will develop a roadmap for the system’s design, agency and institutional responsibilities, and next steps starting this summer.

If approved, the agencies could launch the system within a few years and have it fully operational in the early 2030s, The Block reported.

The initiative targets faster settlement, aiming to move stock and government bond processing to real-time from two days, with a portion of banks’ accounts held at the BOJ tokenized on a blockchain network, the report said.
