Japan PM Takaichi faces expected cabinet reshuffle in September

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is expected to carry out her next cabinet reshuffle in mid- or late September, according to reporting cited by SCMP Economy that points to government and ruling party sources.

The changes are expected to help Takaichi bolster her coalition, reward Liberal Democratic Party lawmakers, and win support from junior coalition partner Ishin no Kai, while a reshuffle would follow the government’s planned tax reform package.

SCMP Economy said the package includes a consumption tax cut for food targeted for mid-September, and that a personnel reshuffle is likely after the tax system reform package is adopted.

The timing would also be influenced by Takaichi’s schedule, including reported plans to attend a UN General Assembly session in the United States in late September, with the current reshuffle expected to be her first since taking office last October.
